How do I get rid of my old sofa?

Exiting times, you’ve bought a new sofa or chairs, it’s nearly time for you receive your new furniture. You’ve waited few days, weeks or maybe even months but you now know the date and you can’t wait to curl up and sink into the plush new fabric.

Now you need to work out what to do with your old sofa.

The simple and easy answer is to get in touch with Martins waste Solutions. There are other options for removal of your old sofa, but the easiest will be a Martin’s waste Solutions Sofa Disposal. Not only will you be able to use your old furniture until the last minute, but we do the heavy lifting and even better your sofa will be responsibly disposed of too. Can I take my Sofa to the Local tip?

If you are up for a bit of heavy lifting and have someone to help (it’s usually a two-person lift) and you have or can borrow/hire a van big enough, you can take the sofa to the tip. Remember to work out the best route out of the house to avoid damaging walls of doors. Research lifting techniques to avoid injury and wear gloves to protect your hands.

Most Local Recycling Centres will happily accept your sofa, most will recycle or reuse as much of the sofa as possible.

If you are using a van, it’s probably best to check if you need to book with your local tip or recycling centre before you go.

So, if you can tick all the boxes above this might be an option for you. Check with your local council as most provide a furniture collection service, but this, of course, has a cost attached.

How much does it cost to remove an old sofa with my council?

Many councils do offer a sofa collection service, and cost depend on the size of the furniture and your location.  Typically, they charge between £20 to £70. Wait times and schedules vary but expect to wait around 2 to 6 weeks.

If you are lucky your council may operate a rota-style service where free collections take place in each location every two weeks or two months, depending on the area.

As often as not, the council service is collection only and unless to have a disability or elderly you will be expected to take your old Sofa outside for loading onto the van.

What are my other options?

If you are reading this, you’ve probably already tried various auction websites and local Face Book pages. If you’ve not already done so take some nice pictures and give this a try, although be prepared to answer quite a few questions.

Charity Shops have traditionally been a good way of moving on your old sofa or armchair. Many charities are becoming increasingly reluctant to take old sofas due to the need to comply with regulations such as Fire Safety. If you are not sure get in touch with your local charity store of choice. Remember to ask what their collection times are and if the Sofa needs to be carried outside before they collect.
